St. Martha Feast Day

"Have I not told you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?"

What's on your calendar this week?
On July 29th, we celebrate the feast of St. Martha, unofcial patron of workaholics and busybodies everywhere. Martha appears several tmes in Scripture. One passage we heard in our recent Sunday Gospel.

Jesus has visited the home of Martha and Mary. Mary sits at the feet of our Lord, soaking in his teaching. In the meantme, Martha is washing dishes, preparing hors d'oeuvres, and playing the hostess. Sound familiar? John's Gospel doesn't shy away from Martha's actve nature either. Afer the death of their brother Lazarus, Martha is the frst to greet Jesus, and while she's quite confdent in Jesus' power to heal, she's the frst to warn him of the possible smell should the tomb be opened. While Mary ofen gets the credit for contemplatve holiness, we can't forget that pragmatc is a saint, too! As we strive to place Jesus in the right perspectve, making him king of our hearts and over all our daily tasks, we can know that we're in good company.

El 29 de Julio celebramos la festa de Santa Marta, patrona no ofcial de los adictos al trabajo de todo el mundo. Marta aparece varias veces en las Escrituras. Un pasaje que escuchamos en nuestro reciente evangelio dominical. Jesús ha visitado la casa de Marta y María. María se sienta a los pies de nuestro Señor, empapándose de sus enseñanzas.

Mientras tanto, Marta lava platos, prepara entremeses y hace de anftriona. ¿Suena familiar? El evangelio de Juan tampoco rehuye el carácter actvo de Marta. Después de la muerte de su hermano Lázaro, Marta es la primera en saludar a Jesús y, aunque confa bastante en el poder de curación de Jesús, es la primera en advertrle del posible olor si se abre la tumba. Si bien a María a menudo se le atribuye el mérito de la santdad contemplatva, ¡no podemos olvidar que la pragmátca también es santa! Mientras nos esforzamos por colocar a Jesús en la perspectva correcta, haciéndolo rey de nuestros corazones y sobre todas nuestras tareas diarias, podemos saber que estamos en buena compañía.
