Gospel Meditation: Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord
Outside Chicago, there is a small cemetery in the woods behind Mundelein Seminary, where I was a student. One night I was exploring it. I looked up and was shocked to see an imposing seventeen-foot angel towering over me and preparing to blow a trumpet. Adrenaline rushed through me. I gasped and uttered, “Oh my God!” Quickly I realized it was in fact a massive bronze statue. I tried to calm myself down. But it still freaked me out.

As we begin to celebrate Easter today, this image might seem a bit unnerving. But please recall that for the first disciples on the morning of the resurrection, it was precisely that. It wasn’t joyful at first, it was terrifying. It wasn’t peaceful, it was unsettling. In that Jerusalem cemetery, something otherworldly had happened. Angels announced that he was no longer dead, but alive. They had blown their trumpets, so to speak, and Jesus had risen. Soon the disciples’ shock in that dark cemetery would turn into joy.
We all have our own places of the dead, too, don’t we? Deceased loved ones. Our tired patterns of blame. Relationships stuck in resentment. Indifference to the poor. Lost dreams. Despair about our future. Fear of sickness and death. These are our “cemeteries” where we don’t expect much to happen. Today we enter if we dare those places with the disciples. See the mighty angel standing there, trumpet ready to blare!

Unos meses antes de casarse, mi hermana de veintitrés años y su prometido planearon un viaje por carretera a través del país para visitar a su familia. Mis padres les dijeron que sólo podían ir si dormían en habitaciones de hotel separadas y se ofrecieron a pagar la cuenta. Puede parecer mojigato, pero mis padres querían que la joven pareja comprender que su próxima unidad era estrecha, pero no todavía. La paciencia solidifica el amor.

El Tiempo de Pascua es el más importante de la historia de la Salvación, por lo tanto, las celebraciones durante este tiempo de Pascua son las más importantes y solemnes de nuestro Calendario Litúrgico. El Tiempo Pascual dura cincuenta días, y con la fiesta de Pentecostés se cierra este tiempo de júbilo y presencia viva de Cristo Resucitado. Hoy celebramos el Domingo de Resurrección, y el mensaje de Pascua es: “Cristo ha Resucitado”. Está frase, hermosa y llena de esperanza para todos, se repite en cada lectura de la Misa. Ahora, es el tiempo de celebrar el día central de nuestra fe. El sufrimiento ha quedado atrás, el sepulcro vacío, el sudario, las vendas, han quedado en el pasado. Jesús, ahora vive y vive para siempre.
Por el bautismo hemos resucitado con Cristo y esa es la Buena Nueva que no debemos de desaprovechar. San Pablo lo especifica muy bien y da sentido a nuestro bautismo: “Si han resucitado con Cristo, busquen las cosas de arriba, donde Cristo está sentado a la derecha de Dios” (Colosenses 3,1). ¿Cuáles serán las cosas de arriba a las que San pablo se refiere? ¿Serán visibles a nuestros ojos? Dejemos que Dios actúe en nosotros y será muy fácil descubrirlas. No hay que ir muy lejos, solo busca a tu alrededor y las verás. Personas por la calle piden comida, techo, medicina. En casa, niños preguntan por tiempo de calidad, los matrimonios, buscan comprensión y amor. Nuestro reto es no olvidar que ¡Este es el día en que actuó el Señor!
